Authentic Greek take-out available during 'Taste'

EAST LONGMEADOW The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Luke, 400 Prospect Street, is gearing up for its fifth annual Taste of Greece event to be held the weekend of Oct. 27 29.

This popular and much anticipated culinary experience offers guests the option to dine in the Pappas Fellowship Hall "taverna" or meals can be packaged to take home.

"All of the dishes we offer are homemade, created authentically, with fresh and top quality imported products," said Beatrice Syner, co-chairman of the event. "These items reheat very well because they are so freshly made."

New to the Taste this year will be a phone-in service for Friday lunch orders.

"We are anticipating that the local business people will give us a try for lunch. They can call the Church and place their order, and it will be ready and packaged to go when they arrive to pick it up," Syner said.

An a la carte menu featuring favorite dishes such as gyro, souvlaki (pork shish-ka-bob), spinach pie, Greek salad, and more, including a fish lunch, will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Also packaged to go are the ever-popular sweet breads and pastries.

According to Ann Flynn, who oversees a cookie baking workshop, "our baked goods freeze well and can be brought out at the holidays or when entertaining. They are made using traditional recipes with ingredients that are of the highest quality. The pastries and breads are delicious now or later."

Another feature of the annual Taste of Greece event is the sale of specialty Greek gifts and imports. Bill George, event co-chairman, is excited to welcome the community to the newly constructed addition to the Pappas Fellowship Hall. New classrooms and meeting rooms have added more space for the parishioners as well as offering more space for the "Agora" Gift Shop, the Youth Booth where the children of the parish will sell Greek novelty items, and a book store all to be open for business during the event weekend.

The Taste of Greece will be serving lunch and dinner Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Greek music featuring local talents will be provided each evening as well as special appearances of the St. Luke Youth Dancers.

Menu items include gyro, souvlaki, spanakopita, moussaka, pastitsio, avgolemono soup, dolmades, rice pilaf, souzoukakia, green beans, fish dinner/lunch, lamb shank dinner and chicken dinner.

Admission and parking is free and meals range in price from $5 to $11 and there will be a cash bar. For more information or a full menu, call the Church at 525-4551.
