EAST LONGMEADOW – A group of volunteers rallied together at Pete’s Sweets in East Longmeadow last week to decorate 700 cupcakes to be passed out to breast cancer survivors at the annual Rays of Hope Walk on Oct. 22.
Peter Gray, owner of Pete’s Sweets, in the past has been involved with Rays of Hope on a smaller scale. In previous years, Gray has donated a portion of his pink-frosted cupcake sales to the organization during breast cancer awareness month. This year however, he decided to go all in.
Gray baked 700 cupcakes in various flavors in preparation for the event. He whipped up copious amounts of pink frosting in corresponding frosting bags, set aside pink fondant hearts and placed bowls of pink, white, and shimmery sprinkles. Volunteers were able to come into his shop, don a pink apron, and decorate as many cupcakes as possible before the night was out. The result was 700 beautifully decorated cupcakes to offer up to breast cancer survivors.
“This year, we wanted to increase our involvement, and of course we couldn’t think of a better way to do that than to make cupcakes for the Rays of Hope Walk & Run Toward the Cure event,” Gray said.
Local businesses donated goods to Gray for this event. Arnold’s Meats donated butter, Party World in West Springfield donated individual cupcake containers and Perkins Food Service/GFS donated cupcake-making supplies.
“It was beautiful witnessing everyone coming together as a community for such an important cause,” Gray noted.
Gray, along with volunteers, stationed themselves at the Survivor’s Tent to offer up cupcakes with a smile.
“It really was a joyous, special occasion, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to show our support in our own sweet way,” Gray said.
