EAST LONGMEADOW Fire Chief P. Robert Wallace has been honored by the East Longmeadow/Longmeadow Chamber of Commerce as Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

"Over the course of many years he has given a lot to the town and he tends to fly under the radar," said Dawn Stark, incoming East Longmeadow/Longmeadow Chamber of Commerce president .

She said Wallace, "takes the ball and runs with it from start to finish."

Wallace joined the East Longmeadow Call Fire Department in 1971. For 35 years he's served the department as fire fighter, lieutenant, captain, and since 2004 as a chief fire officer.

"He's served the town in various capacities," Stark said, noting his participation in organizations such as the American Legion and East Longmeadow Rotary Club.

Stark listed many of Wallace's characteristics as those that they look for when selecting a Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

"We look for someone who has given back to the community in various ways. We were honored and pleased to present [the award] to him," Stark added. "He's an outstanding recipient and we know he will continue to give back to the community. The community has really benefitted from his volunteerism."
