EAST LONGMEADOW The School Committee gave superintendent Dr. Edward Costa an exceptional rating with their evaluation and extended his contract for one more year, acting chair Bob Mazzariello said.

"Three years ago, the School Committee adopted a policy that evaluates the superintendent in 33 categories," Mazzariello said. "Each member fills out an evaluation and grades the superintendent from one, unsatisfactory, to nine, exceptional. Dr. Costa achieved an exceptional rating. The East Longmeadow School Committee extends Dr. Costa's current contract for one more year, through the 2012-2013 school year."

The committee approved and accepted the extension and evaluation results.

In other committee actions, business manager Theresa Olejarz told the committee that fuel oil is still high. "It has gone down a little," she said. "We still have time to lock in, and we don't even have to [lock in] if the price doesn't change."

Costa brought before the committee a revision to Admissions Policy JF-E-1, which deals with child custody and where a child goes to school.

"The courts have determined that where a child sleeps on school nights 51 percent of the time (three out of the five school days) is where the child attends school," Costa said. "I'd like this passed now because there are active cases to take of. There is a sense of urgency with this."

The revision was passed.

Costa also reminded the committee of a joint budget hearing for the town and School Committee on April 4 at 7 p.m. in the East Longmeadow High School auditorium.

The next School Committee meeting will be on April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Committee conference room in the superintendent's office.
