EAST LONGMEADOW — Two new police officers were sworn in at Town Hall on July 1 after recently graduating from the police academy.

Joseph Dalessio and Matthew Lecuyer, both lifelong East Longmeadow residents, completed their 20-week, 800-hour academy training with the regional police academy at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) on June 28 and will now fill two patrol officer vacancies that were created with the promotion of Sgt. Daniel Bruno and the retirement of Officer Amico Barone.

After the ceremony, the two began on-the-job training with the East Longmeadow Police Department.

"They will continue in house training, learning call handling and [will] be attending E911 training, and Emergency Medical Dispatching as well during the upcoming weeks," Police Chief Douglas Mellis said. "We look forward to seeing them on the streets sometime in August."

Dalessio, the son of Sgt. Jeffrey Dalessio, graduated Phi Theta Kappa from STCC and the achieved a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University and went on to the academy for reserve officers in Longmeadow.

When the Board of Selectmen hired him in December 2012, Dalessio was attending the Connecticut Police Academy in preparation of becoming a member of the South Windsor, Conn., Police Department.

At the Western Massachusetts police academy, he scored impressively high.

"Officer Dalessio was fortunate enough to score the highest in academics for his class," Mellis said.

Lecuyer graduated from Springfield College in 2010 with a degree in criminal justice and was employed by the East Longmeadow Public Schools as a paraprofessional working with special needs students when he was hired.

Mellis said with the addition of Dalessio and Lecuyer, the Police Department now has a full roster, however, another retirement is anticipated in March 2014.
