Date: 10/15/2015

EAST LONGMEADOW – DC Strength & Fitness is joining forces with Rays of Hope to help raise funds to help find the cure for breast cancer by hosting a Sweat Pink master class workout on Oct. 24.

Donna Chalfant, owner of DC Strength & Fitness at 175 Benton Drive, told Reminder Publications attendees would learn from the expertise of four fitness trainers, including high intensity interval training, barre method, strength training, and metabolic conditioning.

“There’s definitely something for everyone and it’s a great opportunity for the participants to get to try something new [with] no pressure and then get to maybe meet another fitness professional that they don’t normally get to interact with,” DC Strength & Fitness Trainer Elizabeth Lenart said.

DC Strength & Fitness Trainer Parker Geane said metabolic conditioning is a high intensity workout that mixes strength and cardiovascular training using different mediums such as pushing sleds, medical balls, and box jumping.

Lenart said high intensity interval training entails using a BOSU ball for balance training and body weight training to create “a lot of after work to continue to burn fat calories later on in the day.”

The barre method is an endurance workout consisting of exercises for the legs, upper body and core by utilizing resistance band, light weights, and an individual’s body weight, Chalfant said.

She added that this is the first year the fitness group has begun raising funds for Rays of Hope.

Lenart said there will be team challenges that would “rally everybody around a community cause.” Team challenges include areas such as upper body, core, lower body, and BOSU ball.

A pink BOSU ball and passes to DC Strength and Fitness classes will be raffled during the master class, Chalfant said.

One-hundred percent of the funds raised will be given to Rays of Hope.

“This is one [type of cancer] that all of us [knew] somone [who had it],” she added. “I had six of my clients that had breast cancer. That’s just too many.”

The fundraising goal for the event is $1,000 to $5,000, she noted.

Pre-registration is required at DC Fitness, however walk-ins are welcome based on availability. All checks can be made payable to Rays of Hope. The event is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and open to individuals 13 and older. Healthy refreshments will also be available.
