EAST LONGMEADOW — In the world of truck driving, where safety and skill are essential, a select few drivers distinguish themselves. Among them is Roland Bolduc, a FedEx driver from East Longmeadow, who won the Sleeper Cab category at the National Truck Driving Championships in August.
He is no stranger to the podium, collecting state and national titles over the years.
The NTDC, organized by the American Trucking Associations, has been an annual event since 1937, originally known as the National Truck Rodeo. With its long-standing history, it is a testament to the dedication and professionalism truck drivers bring daily.
Roland’s involvement with the NTDC began in 1997 when he seized victory at the state competition. The success led him to the national stage, earning an impressive fourth place. He works at FedEx’s Windsor, Connecticut, facility.
When reflecting on his first participation, Bolduc said, “It was a moment of pride and realization. I saw what dedication to the profession could achieve.” The championship isn’t just a showcase of driving skills but a testament to a driver’s unwavering focus on safety.
“You have to be accident-free for a year to compete,” Bolduc pointed out. “The NTDC promotes safety, and it’s a personal goal for many of us to stay accident-free not just for the competition but for ourselves, our families, and everyone on the road.”
Participation in the NTDC involves a thorough assessment of both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Drivers take a written examination, perform a rapid pre-trip inspection where they identify vehicle defects, and demonstrate their driving skills in a series of tests.
Out of the 418 participants this year, 155 were from FedEx. “FedEx always encourages us to prioritize safety. It’s no wonder so many of us qualify for the NTDC,” he said.
For Bolduc, the competition extends beyond the tests and countless gauntlets. The NTDC is also about the connections and bonds formed among the drivers. He often refers to the event as a “family reunion,” where he has forged long-standing relationships.
“Over the years, I’ve met so many wonderful people. The camaraderie among us drivers is unique,” he added.
The challenges posed in the skills tests are intricate. Bolduc recalled one, saying, “In one test, precision is key. It’s all about ensuring your left front tire is positioned perfectly around a designated obstacle. It might sound simple, but the execution is challenging.”
The Connecticut FedEx team earned the state team award. “It feels great to be part of a team recognized for its collective skills and dedication,” he remarked.
The NTDC, over the years, has also been a family affair for Bolduc. He recalled, “My daughters, when they were younger, accompanied me to the nationals. They’d even interact with other drivers’ children. Those memories hold a special place in my heart.”
A noteworthy aspect of Roland’s journey is mentoring emerging drivers. At FedEx’s Challenge, an in-house driver competition, seasoned professionals like Bolduc offer guidance. “It’s essential to ensure our knowledge and experiences benefit the newer drivers. They’re the future,” he said.
He clinched the overall championship twice at the NTDC. “Winning in 2017 and the year before that was incredible. Each victory is a reminder of the hard work and dedication,” he shared.
For Bolduc, collective achievements hold equal billing as individual accomplishments. He acknowledged FedEx’s significant presence at the NTDC and said, “I’m proud to be part of a company that values and promotes safety so much,” he noted.
Bolduc’s journey in truck driving is a blend of skill, safety consciousness, mentoring, and community involvement.
