ELHS students create holiday cards for veterans

Date: 12/17/2015

EAST LONGMEADOW – Advanced art students at East Longmeadow High School (ELHS) created at least 60 holiday themed greeting cards for local veterans, who are anticipated to receive the cards before Christmas.

ELHS Fine Arts Teacher Cynthia Newsome told Reminder Publications this year marks the fourth consecutive year students have been asked by the local American Legion Post 293 to create cards for veterans.

“The majority of them go to the [Holyoke] Soldiers Home,” she noted. “I generally do it with my Art II classes and they each have to make two designs and they can be holiday or seasonal and I try to keep at least one of them non-specific [one holiday or another].”

She added the students created approximately 30 different designs.

“They each have to come up with a design and one of them is in scratch board,” Newsome said. “The other one has to be a drawn design. I would copy them onto colored paper.”

The project is a way for students to connect to the community, she noted.

“[It] also shows appreciation to our veterans and a small gesture can mean a lot,” she added.
