By Sarah M. Corigliano Assistant Managing Editor EAST LONGMEADOW The East Longmeadow Police Department last week announced it will participate in National Night Out for the first time Aug. 1. Police Chief Douglas Mellis told The Reminder that, while the evening is hosted by the local police department, it is an opportunity for the whole community to come together and enjoy each other's company. "The goal of National Night Out is to heighten drug and crime awareness," Mellis explained. He added that, while East Longmeadow is a "Crime Watch Neighborhood," the federal government no longer financially supports the program as much as it did during the Clinton administration. National Night Out will help keep residents informed of the dangers of drugs and crime, teach them ways to prevent them from becoming a problem in the community, and let them know what the East Longmeadow Police Department is doing about such risks. Mellis said some parts of the evening, which will take place on the grounds of East Longmeadow High School, are still being planned. In addition to crime prevention materials and public safety and emergency equipment on view, Mellis said he has reached out to community organizations and churches to be a part of the event, which will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Possible activities are a Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit, a Life Flight helicopter and more. To make the evening complete, Mellis said he has also reached out to East Longmeadow businesses to become sponsors. He hopes individuals and businesses will pitch in to help provide refreshments and food for the evening. Mellis said National Night Out began 23 years ago as a collaboration between local police departments and their communities for a crime free night of fun. Anyone who would like to help or become a sponsor may contact the East Longmeadow Police Department at 525-5444.By Sarah M.
