Federici Memorial Golf Tourney supports local scholarships

Date: 8/9/2023

EAST LONGMEADOW — The ninth annual Daniel Federici Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Franconia Golf Course, 619 Dwight Rd. in Springfield. The tournament has a 1 p.m. shotgun start with registration beginning at 11-11:30 a.m. and lunch at 12 p.m. This tournament is in memory of organizer and former East Longmeadow Selectman Paul Federici’s son, Daniel, who died in a car crash on July 13, 2015.

“Daniel was a great kid,” said Federici. “He was married and had three children. We liked to golf together, and Daniel liked to golf with his friends.”

He continued, “We have people that have played in every tournament since we started and a lot of those were my son’s friends who are our friends now. We all come out, have fun and tell stories about Daniel. It’s a nice way to come back and give back in his name.”

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Daniel Federici Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing scholarships to local students.

Federici started the tournament two months after his son’s death through the kindness of a friend who had a tournament scheduled at Franconia Golf Course. From there the tournament was formed and in the first two years the money went to Daniel’s children. Then Federici and his family decided to set up a nonprofit organization and began collecting money to give out in scholarships. Their vision was to be able to give out scholarships in Daniel’s name because he was a hardworking student. Over the last four years, they’ve given out close to $30,000 at East Longmeadow High School and St. Mary’s Academy in Longmeadow; with this past being four $2,000 scholarships and a $1,000 scholarship going to St. Mary’s.

“We like to keep our scholarships at least as much as we gave out this past spring,” Federici said. “We would like to be able to give a total of $10,000 to help students further their education.”

He went on to say, “We’ve been fortunate in that this is our ninth tournament, and we still have a strong following. Our goal is to keep this foundation going for the tournament and the ability to give out scholarships on an annual basis or increase the number of people we can give scholarships to.”
