Town announces plans for Veterans' Day ceremonies

EAST LONGMEADOW -- The Veteran's Day ceremonies will take place on Nov. 11 according to the Board of Selectmen and the Veteran's Day Committee. All the participants should assemble at 10:30 a.m. in the American Legion parking lot at 3 Legion Court and Crane Avenue and be ready to line up to march at 10:45 a.m.

Marchers will then step off at 10:55 a.m. and proceed to the Town Hall as the bells toll at the First Congregational Church. The marchers will be directed and led by Joe Scanlon with David Kerns playing the bagpipes. Those speaking will be lined up behind the podium. The veterans will stand behind the speakers.

Master of Ceremonies Brian Tidlund, Commander of the American Legion Post 293 will open the events at 11 a.m. with a flag salute, the Pledge of Allegiance and the playing of the national anthem, which will also be sung by Kate Elmendorf. Several speakers will include Selectman Paul Federichi, Senator Gale Candaras, and State Reps Angelo Puppolo and Brian Ashe. Also slated to speak are ITAM Post 64 Commander Carmine DeFranco, and Post 293 Vice Commander Kevin McMaster and Chaplin Russ Rennel.

Ceremonies will also include placing the wreaths at the Veterans Monument at the rotary and the Memorial Marker at the Town Hall with military honors by local veterans, the playing of taps and reading the names of the deceased veterans of East Longmeadow. All veterans graves will be flagged by Flag Officer Dan Kneeland at the East Longmeadow cemeteries.

Maple Street in front of the Town Hall between Shaker Road and Crane Avenue will be closed for an hour to traffic during the ceremonies. Following the closing of the formal ceremonies all participants and attendees will march back to Post 293 for light refreshments. If the weather is inclement, formal ceremonies will take place at the American Legion Hall at 11 a.m.

The 2010 Veteran's Committee includes Post 293 members Brian Tidlund, Mike Lupo, Kevin McMaster, Chris Mee and Russ Rennel. ITAM Post 64 members Carmine DeFranco, Peter Veteramo, A. Ronald Davis and Felice DiMichele.
