EAST LONGMEADOW -- Fire safety education never stops.

That's why the East Longmeadow fire department will once again host its annual open house on Oct. 2.

The event, which is scheduled for noon to 3 p.m., is designed to give residents a chance to meet or reacquaint themselves with members of the fire department and offer an opportunity to gather information about home and fire safety.

"I think it's important for the public to get to know their firefighters and to know that these are good guys and women," Chief Richard Brady said. "We're also giving people information. You have no idea how many people still aren't prepared. We'll go to houses for other issues and we'll find there are no carbon monoxide detectors."

Children are a very large focus of the event, according to Brady. While a bounce house and free pizza and popcorn are part of the attraction for kids, they will also get a chance to get to know their local firefighters.

"It's important for children to come and see the fire trucks and to see the firefighters," Brady said. "That way they can think of the firefighters as good guys they should run to, not scary people they should hide in a closet from."

Parents who bring their children to the open house will also have the opportunity to ask questions regarding fire safety in their homes.

"It gives parents an opportunity to ask questions they might have been too embarrassed to call the station and ask about," Brady said. "We're going to be here so they can ask those questions."

Included in the day's events are a "jaws of life" car extrication demonstration, a demonstration on what to do in the event of an oil fire, tours of the fire station and the opportunity to see the inside of the trucks, including the newest member of the fleet, which was purchased last year.

The fire station is located at 180 Somers Road. The open house is free for the public.
