EAST LONGMEADOW The first phase of the Pleasant View Senior Center renovations is almost complete.

The new heating and air conditioning system is in place, as is a new fire suppressant system, a new roof and new lighting. The large main room has been painted as well.

"There haven't been any really big changes yet," Carolyn Brennan, executive director of the Council on Aging, said. "The kitchen, the bathrooms and the other rooms are ready but not finished just yet."

Brennan added most of the senior activities that had been moved because of the renovations have now returned to the senior center.

"Even with the rooms torn apart, there are curtains up and tablecloths on the tables," she said. "That really shows how well our seniors have been coping with the changes."

The final parts of this first phase of the senior center's renovation will include finishing the activity rooms, the kitchen and the bathrooms.

"The new bathrooms will be huge," Brennan stated. "They were desperate for renovation." She added that she hopes the first phase of renovation and remodeling will be finished within the next month.

Even though the work that has already been finished doesn't seem like much, Brennan said the projects have improved the center.

"These renovations have made a big difference, especially the improved lighting," she said. "As we see the lighting going up, we stand back and say, 'Wow, what a difference.'"

The next phase of the renovation will start July 1 if the funds are appropriated by the town. That phase would include the installation of new windows, a renovation of the center's office space and ensuring all entryways are fully accessible by seniors.
