EAST LONGMEADOW Parents are invited to attend an Internet safety lecture at East Longmeadow High School this Thursday. Online safety continues to be an ongoing issue as more and more teens use the Internet as a means of communication.

This is the second year the school district has hosted the talk, thanks to a collaboration between the police department and the high school.

"It's an interactive program and it goes over such things as Myspace and Facebook, the social networking things," explained School Resource Officer Don Cavanaugh.

Speaker Katie LeClerc, formerly of the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, is going to go over online safety suggestions. Cavanaugh said her presentation is excellent. She does an online chat room demonstration.

"She goes in a chat room. Within a few minutes she has someone soliciting her. She says she is a 14 year-old girl and she gets a couple of people trying to solicit her," Cavanaugh said. "It's a great way to show people how dangerous that can be."

The talk will take Jan. 17 at at the East Longmeadow High School auditorium at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees must be 18 and over due to the sensitive nature of the discussion.
