EAST LONGMEADOW Last Wednesday the Jaycees presented Mapleshade Elementary School with a check for $4,000 to fund equipment purchases for its audio/video broadcast room.

The Jaycees met with Mapleshade Principal Wayne Wilson, Mapleshade teacher Deborah Barry and Mapleshade school psychologist Larry Cadorette to present the check last Wednesday night.

Cadorette explained that the equipment will allow students and teachers to broadcast anything from morning announcements to student-directed puppet shows to any television in the school.

The educators all reflected on the ideas that have already been generated by Mapleshade students, who are very excited to be able to direct their own programming. They added that the students have also been learning how to operate the equipment.

The equipment was purchased from and installed by Valley Communications.

Jaycees member Adam Oliveri said the club gave the money to Mapleshade after they made a presentation to the Jaycees, seeking their support.

"They [the school] came to us and asked [for the money]," Oliveri said. "They put on such a great presentation, how could we say no?"

Jaycees member Sean Coughlin added that, through its annual fund-raisers, such as the summer carnival, the Jaycees generate funds that they intend to give back to the community in a variety of ways. Last year they donated money to Meadowbrook School for technology purchases there.

"We're here to give the money we make to the community," Coughlin explained.

Barry added that the Jaycees, through their community service, also serve as role models to East Longmeadow students.
