Lees named distinguished citizen 2006

EAST LONGMEADOW The Lions Club of East Longmeadow last week announced that it has selected State Senator Brian P. Lees of East Longmeadow as its recipient of the East Longmeadow Lions Club 2006 Distinguished Citizen of the Year award.

This award, presented yearly, honors an East Longmeadow resident who has participated in civic, charitable or humanitarian activities that significantly contribute to the well being of the community.

Lees, for the past 25 years, has been involved in activities and advocacy for church, youth, senior citizens and people with disabilities activities. For several years he has sponsored a senior citizen health forum that has provided valuable information for seniors to assist them in obtaining needed services. Lees has also served as board member or on advisory teams of many non-profit associations. He has received dozens of awards from various non-profit and community service organizations. The senator is well known and respected in our region and throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Lees graduated from Salem State College in 1975 with Bachelors of Science and Arts. From 1976 through 1978 he worked as an assistant to United States Senator Edward W. Brooke in his Boston and Washington, D.C. offices. During the years 1979 through 1988 the senator was employed in managerial positions in the private sector.

Then, in January 1989, he started serving as the state senator from the First Hampden and Hampshire Districts, rising to Assistant Minority Leader in 1993, and then to Minority Leader from 1993 to the present.

He is retiring from the Senate this year after a very productive career. He is married to Nancy Ward Lees, and they currently live in East Longmeadow.

An award banquet honoring Lees is planned for May 30 at the Elmcrest Country Club, 105 Somersville Rd., East Longmeadow. The evening begins with a cash bar social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.
