EAST LONGMEADOW The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has been hosting their annual lock up over the past few weeks. Last week, local business and community leaders were "arrested" and worked their phones feverishly to have their friends, family and acquaintances "bail them out."

The booking and bailing took place inside Spoleto's in the Center Square shopping plaza in East Longmeadow.

MDA District Director Page Brody said each participant had a $1,600 goal which would send two children in India to a MDA summer camp.

Lori Cooney of Wilbraham was being "booked" just as The Reminder arrived. She is a repeat offender who said "folks tend to be very responsive" when she is fundraising for the MDA.

"It's a cause in great need of support," Cooney said.

The MDA has summer camps nationwide. According to www.mdausa.org, "Each camp provides a wide range of activities especially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. Accessible activities range from outdoor sports such as swimming, boating, baseball, football and horseback riding, to less physically demanding programs like arts and crafts and talent shows."

Camps have been held each year since 1955.

"Our summer camps are pretty awesome places," Brody added. "[We even have] one in Canton, Mass. Kids can go free of charge to their families."

The MDA Greater East Longmeadow Executive Lock Up netted approximately $15,000.
