Recently, the Meadows Lodge A.F. & A.M. awarded $5,000 in scholarships and donations.

The Meadows Lodge was instituted a year ago as a result of the merging of the Charles C. Spellman Lodge of East Longmeadow and the Longmeadow Lodge. This was their first scholarship donation since their merger a year ago. East Longmeadow Public Library and Storrs Library received $1,500 each for their children's departments' summer reading programs.

"The lodge feels it is important for kids to be taught to read but also to be given an incentive to read," Meadows Lodge Secretary Joseph N. Wescott said.

That incentive also spills over into education. The lodge awarded two awards in the amount of $1,000 each to East Longmeadow's Marissa Kallaugher and Longmeadow's Justin Wells. Kallaugher was the recipients of the James A. Poole Memorial Scholarship and Wells received the Archie T. Rintoul Scholarship.

"Over the years we have probably awarded in the vicinity of eight scholarships," Wescott added. "This one, I believe, is number nine."

The Meadows Lodge A.F. & A.M. has approximately 250 members and is located at 43 Chestnut St. in East Longmeadow.
