EAST LONGMEADOW Youngsters did their part this year to assist the Lions Club and the U.S. Postal Service with their annual food drive.

Hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, the drive benefited the Open Pantry in Springfield.

Birchland Park Middle School student Samantha Scibelli and two of her friends, Kate Pelletier and Chelsea Fisk, volunteered to sort the food before it was loaded and sent to the Open Pantry.

"My mom is a letter carrier so I wanted to help too," she said. "We went to the post office and the mail trucks would come in and drop off the food and we would unload and sort it."

Scibelli said sorting the food made it easier for the Open Pantry.

"It was easier for them. [That way] they wouldn't have to sort it themselves when they got it," she added.

The eighth grader plans to help out next year, as well. She said she doesn't have one particular reason for volunteering.

"I kind of just wanted to help," she said.

Letter carriers across the country collected non-perishable food donations on May 13 as they delivered mail along their postal routes. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers, this is the nation's largest one-day effort to combat hunger in America.
