EAST LONGMEADOW – Murphy’s Nutrition is a brand new one-stop shop for getting a day started, offering energy bombs, shakes and kid-friendly drinks. It is a place for teens and college students to hangout, there is a play set for children, and adults can unwind for a few minutes sipping on a Murphy’s Nutrition drink.
“We wanted a walk-in business,” said owner/operator Matelyn Murphy. “We want to meet people and bring in community. East Longmeadow is such a close-knit town, and everyone knows each other. I think it’s a really good opportunity for the shop.”
All of their drinks are water-based with sugar-free fruit flavorings and hydrators. Their energy bombs, also known as teas, have different caffeine levels such as boosted (their medium level of 160 mg), littt (200 mg) and double littt (275 mg). All of their shakes include protein, fiber and probiotic with flavors like cake batter, peanut butter cup, strawberry cheesecake, coconut cream pie, cannoli and many others. This fall, the shop has their cranberry apple cider tea, pumpkin pie and apple spice shake, as well as their Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice energy bomb for the month of October.
Murphy said she doesn’t want to intimidate customers and is trying to make it so that everyone gets the experience of tasting a well satisfying drink and not be scared that it’s a protein shake. “We’re giving customers the option to try something new and give it an opportunity that they wouldn’t think,” Murphy explained.
“You’re going to be sipping on our teas for an hour because it’s a slow caffeine that keeps you going through the day. You’re getting a protein complex nutrient shake that is giving you cleaner energy.”
She continued, “It’s just really trying to grasp that one thing a day, so instead of going to grab your coffee tomorrow morning, we want people to swing in the shop, grab an energy bomb, and see how you feel. I’m not trying to change everybody’s everyday move, but once a week try it.”
Murphy was a baker and bartender for many years and also worked at Garvey’s Nutrition in Wilbraham. She wanted to open her own business but didn’t know what direction she wanted to go. Murphy spoke with the owners of Garvey’s, whom she’s good friends with, on ways to learn the business.
Her background in bartending and baking gives Murphy experience with customer service and flavor profiles. She said she has the ability to experiment with protein shakes, knows what to do with them and what flavors to adjust. In about 10 weeks the shop came together after signing her lease in June.
Murphy’s Nutrition had their grand opening on Sept. 18 and a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 27 where state Rep. Angelo Puppolo presented their official citation welcoming them to the community and state. “It’s always great to welcome a new business to the 12th Hampden District where I represent,” said Puppolo. “During these times, it’s important that new businesses especially small businesses get recognition that they deserve from the Commonwealth with the economy being a little tougher and coming out post-[coronavirus] pandemic where we’ve seen a lot of businesses close and still struggling.” He went on to say, “It’s great to see the investment of a new business come in serving the community and providing a great opportunity for folks to get nutritional drinks and shakes. We welcome Murphy’s Nutrition into East Longmeadow and wish them the best.”
Right now, Murphy is focused on getting through the year and trying to become more a part of the community. She said she wants to make sure they hit the end of the year on a good note. “We hope to become a place where people feel happy to be and want to go,” Murphy said. “We’ve started to see regulars and that’s what our goal is. Our team works hard on remembering our customers order, their names and even where they’re off to. It creates a relationship and that’s the best thing we can hope for becoming a part of the East Longmeadow community.”
