EAST LONGMEADOW – A group of locals have come together every holiday season for the past 10 years to not only host a racquetball party, but to party for a good cause – to raise money for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
At last year’s event, the group of racquetball players raised $14,000 for the Associations efforts to eliminate cancer. This year, however, they raised $18,750.
The 10th annual American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) racquetball party took place on Dec. 14 at Healthtrax Fitness and Wellness Center, located at 45 Crane Ave.
Ten years ago local racquetball players were playing in area tournaments, some weekends they’d compete each day. The group of racquetball players noticed that they enjoyed the format of the tournaments, but they wanted the tournament to support a cause. Member of the Cancer Research Event team Paul Stierer explained that the group chose the AACR as it was a charity that covers all types of cancer as opposed to supporting only one.
“There are a number of great, great charities out there. This one just seemed to stand out. There are so many kinds of cancer, it’s very saddening, but the AACR seemed to provide an umbrella for many cancer fighting organizations, and we appreciate the research they’re doing and the high percentage of all the dollars that come in that are dedicated to the research,” Stierer stated after last years event.
In addition to the countless sponsorships by local businesses, the East Longmeadow High School Key Club assisted at the event.
Donations are still being accepted toward the AACR through the group at https://donate.aacr.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.personalCampaign&participantID=2481
