Date: 5/5/2009

On May 7 at 9 a.m., Mountain View Elementary School will be celebrating Arbor Day in a celebration coordinated by the East Longmeadow Garden Club and the Mountain View Elementary School Leadership Team. A host of community dignitaries will be in attendance for the event. State Rep. Angelo Puppolo will be reading a special proclamation. Dr. Edward Costa, Superintendent of Schools, and former State Senator Brian Lees will address the audience. Members of the Conservation Commission, the School Committee, and the Select Board will also be in attendance. The elementary school chorus and band will be performing and students from each grade will be reading special poems about trees. The garden club will be presenting the school with its Arbor Day gift of a Bradford pear tree.

East Longmeadow is one of the few school districts in the state that still celebrates this holiday begun in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska and Mountain View Elementary has kept its Arbor Day tradition going for over 20 years. Arbor Day helps us remember the importance of trees to the environment. The public is welcome to join the festivities.
