EAST LONGMEADOW – On Oct. 1, kids and their families will get exercise, raise money and add a little color to their lives in the Scout Troop 179 Color Run.
Scout Troop 179 Committee Chair Melanie Mannheim said, “You run through a blast of powdered color,” but only on a voluntary basis. The 3-kilometer Color Run will take place at East Longmeadow High School, 180 Maple St. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the Color Run at 10 a.m.
The event is by School-Athon, a company that specializes in color runs and other “athons,” to make fundraising more fun. The color is made of non-toxic colored corn starch and sodium bicarbonate that will wash out of most clothing. The powder has been tested for health and flammability.
“You can run, skip, walk [or] jog.” Mannheim said. Family members of all ages are encouraged to participate. Participants get a free event T-shirt on a first come, first serve basis.
Some of the $30 registration fee will be used to pay for the supplies and organizing materials from School-Athon. Depending on how much money is raised, Scout Troop 179 will benefit from 50 to 70 percent of the profits. Registration fees can be made by cash or checks, made out to Scout Troop 179, send to 317 Westwood Ave., East Longmeadow, MA 01028. There are also donations being accepted in amounts ranging from $5 to $250.
The event is open to troop members and non-members alike. It is equal parts fundraiser and recruitment for new scouts. There will be sign-up sheets on site.
“We’re trying to get more kids involved in Boy Scouts,” said Mannheim. “We go camping, hiking, canoeing – it’s a lot of fun.”
Scout Troop 179, run by Scoutmaster Chris Hamilton, is open to boys in Grades 5 through 12. The troop hosts meetings every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., from September through June, at The New Life Church on Westwood Avenue.
