EAST LONGMEADOW As part of her work to earn her Master's degree in Elementary Education, East Longmeadow resident and Elms College student Krishna Longanecker recently worked with Meadow Brook second graders to help them hone their interviewing skills, and to publish their own book.

In Connie Fratar's classroom, the students learned how to interview each other, take notes, then turn their notes into complete sentences and paragraphs telling a story about their classmates.

They also illustrated the stories, focusing on "The Most Important" points of the story. The students' book was inspired by "The Important Book," by Margaret Wise Brown.

The project culminated last Tuesday morning with Longanecker presenting each child with a photocopied version of their hand-made book, and with each child reading their story aloud.

Longanecker pointed out that the skills learned in this exercise will help the children when they take the MCAS test, as they will be required to take a writing portion.

At the end of the reading, the students also tried out their interviewing skills on this reporter, and several said they would be interested in being in reporter when they grow up.
