Selectmen declare State of Emergency

EAST LONGMEADOW The Board of Selectmen last Tuesday announced that it declared a state of emergency in the town.

The Board has notified the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Regions III and IV of this declaration, effective October 15, 2005.

The Board met in an emergency session on Oct. 15 at 11:30 a.m. in Town Hall to discuss declaring a state of emergency. The Board voted to authorize Chairman John M. Claffey to make the declaration.

"Given the widespread problems caused by the heavy rains and high winds, the Board felt it was necessary to declare a state of emergency in East Longmeadow," Claffey said.

According to a press release issued last Tuesday, the Board has maintained close contact with the town's Fire and Police chiefs, DPW, Building Inspector and Emergency Management Director.

"The Board is grateful for the efforts of the town employees to protect public and private property during this time of emergency," Claffey said. "The Board also recognizes the tremendous efforts that will be necessary in the coming weeks and months to repair damage that has been done."
