EAST LONGMEADOW Western Massachusetts isn't known as a haven of glitz and glamour. That's why the staff at the salon Shapes, located at 219 Shaker Road, have a goal of bringing L.A. to E.L.

Shapes will be hosting its first "Platinum Experience" on May 14.

"We educate ourselves so we can be on the top of our game and on top of new styles," Shapes co-owner Timmi Marchese explained. "We have great teachers and get a great learning experience."

Marchese, co-owner Cheryl Roberts and stylist Scott Poirier traveled to the J Beverly Hills Academy in Los Angeles to attend a two-day hands-on advanced haircutting session that immerses students within a creative environment, serving a celebrity clientele. Celebrity stylists share their own masterful cutting and styling techniques for use in students' daily repertoire, according to the J Beverly Hills Web site (www.jbeverlyhills.com/academy.html).

"E.L. needed a little something-something," Marchese stated. "The clients love [what we've learned], and all of us have gotten busier since our trip."

"The Platinum Experience" will be an evening that includes hair treatments, massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and hors d'oeuvres and refreshments "a lovely evening," according to Marchese.

The hair treatment itself uses 28 botanical oils, including those from chamomile, sage, safflower, rose geranium, aloe vera, rosemary and mango.

The May 14 evening is already sold out, however. Marchese said she could've sold out this first event in one night, and found a lot of people reserving the evening as a Mother's Day gift.

Marchese said "The Platinum Experience" could still serve as a belated Mother's Day gift, however Shapes plans on hosting another event either June 11 or 18.
