EAST LONGMEADOW – A fire broke out at Secure Energy Solutions on Somers Road on the morning of July 7 leaving approximately $100,000 of damages in its wake.
Fire Chief Paul Morrissette later told Reminder Publications the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.
The department received the call at 8:45 a.m. and before 10 a.m. the fire was put out, he noted. Traffic flow returned to normal later that morning.
“[There was] heavy damage to the attic area, moderate to heavy on the second floor, and minimal to moderate on the first floor,” Morrissette said. “We had to cut the roof to let the super heated gases out. We had to standby until the power was cut to the building … so instead of putting firefighters in harm’s way we kind of just kept the fire in check. In the range of things, I’d say it’s probably a $100,000 loss.”
Kevin Mattson, owner of Secure Energy Solutions, told Reminder Publications “the lights just went crazy” in the building at the start of the fire.
“We have a plan,” he explained. “We go over safety [procedures] … I was the last guy out to make sure everyone was out of the building.”
Morrissette said he doesn’t consider the cause of the fire to be suspicious, but the department does plan on viewing security footage.
The building was renovated approximately 10 years ago, he noted.
He added the Longmeadow Department responded to the fire as well and provided its ladder truck, which was positioned on Hampden Road, while East Longmeadow’s ladder truck was on Somers Road.
“That’s how we operate. We assist each other back and forth,” Morrissette said. “[It’s] great teamwork.”
