Teachers receive ELEEF grants

Last week, Matt Flanagan, member of the East Longmeadow Educational Endowment Foundation (ELEEF), presented Superintendent Dr. Edward Costa and East Longmeadow Public Schools teachers with over $18,000 to fund grant requests. The funds for the grants were raised primarily through ELEEF's two annual fund-raisers, the golf tournament and dinner dance. This year's golf tournament will take place June 2. Among the 11 recipients of ELEEF grants were East Longmeadow High School history teacher Eddie Polk, who requested a grant to purchase an in focus projector for his classroom. In addition to a teaching tool for him, he said students may also use the projector to present research they have done. "It's one way to liven up the classroom," he said. Cathy Morsch, an eighth grade teacher at Birchland Park Middle School, received a grant for astronomy software and new computers, as well as binoculars for night-time study. "They love astronomy, but if [the lessons] are strictly from textbooks or videos, [it's not as interesting]," Morsch said. "With hands-on activities, it's much more exciting."
