EAST LONGMEADOW East Longmeadow High School senior Alex Ahmed was recently honored by the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials' (IAABO) Western Massachusetts Board, with a $500 scholarship.

He received the Student Athlete Award.

"He's amazing," said his mother Janice. "Sometimes his father and I think he's doing too much, but he manages to handle it all."

The "too much" Janice spoke of is Ahmed's long list of activities, including academic, sports and social groups.

Ahmed is a member of ELHS' As Schools Match Wits team. He's also a member of both the math and science teams; captain of ELHS' baseball team; captain of ELHS' basketball team; a member of the soccer team; he plays trombone in two school bands; he's a drum major in the marching band; co-president of the student council; senior music director for the Spartanum Spectacular Variety Show at ELHS; and he teaches third grade CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) at St. Michael's all of this while maintaining a 4.8 grade point average. He's also a finalist for a national merit scholar.

"It was a nice recognition for him to have," added Janice. "It was just really nice to be recognized by the referees association, someone outside of the community too."

Due to a conflicting schedule, Ahmed's basketball coach Edward Winch accepted the award on his behalf at a ceremony last week.

Janice also said Ahmed is waiting to hear from the eight colleges he applied to.

"He wants to major in mathematics or possibly go into pre-med," she added.

Ahmed was not available for comment by press time.
