EAST LONGMEADOW – The Apple Place, a family farm stand and bakery located at 540 Somers Road since 1971, began offering ice cream for the first time this summer.
Cindy Bellerose, owner of the Apple Place, told Reminder Publications her business began offering 25 flavors of Hadley-based Maple Valley Creamery ice cream on July 8.
She noted that Maple Valley is a family farm as well specializing in dairy products and has only Jersey cows, which produce high butterfat content in its milk that is described as “extra creamy.”
The Apple Place has found success with its ice cream offerings and plans to offer the frozen treat in the autumn as well, she added.
However, the Apple Place isn’t just selling the ice cream by itself – it has been offering a unique alternative by serving its bakery items with Maple Valley ice cream, Bellerose said.
“We have pie a la mode, we do brownie sundaes,” she added. “We take different baked goods, such as croissants and put it with ice cream.”
Some ice creams flavors include seasonal specials such as blueberry and peach as well as unique ones, which include salted caramel truffle, and Kahlua fudge brownie, Bellerose said.
She added that her favorite flavor of ice cream is chocolate raspberry truffle because it’s the perfect combination – “chocolate and raspberry go so well together.”
Soft serve and hard yogurt are also offered, Bellerose said.
The Apple Place plans to offer ice cream every summer from now on, she noted.
An addition was added to the farm stand to create the 15 by 20 ice cream stand, which took about three to four months to build. Glass milk bottles have been repurposed for lighting, near the ice cream stand and two thick logs have tractor seats installed on them for additional seating.
Ice cream hours are 1 to 9 p.m. from Tuesday through Sunday. The Apple Place is open from July to Thanksgiving.
