EAST LONGMEADOW The third annual National Night Out in town drew in nearly 2,200 residents interested in learning more about the services their town offers. Event organizer Susan Grimaldi said this number far exceeded her expectation of 1,000 visitors.

The first two events had poor attendance due to weather, but as Police Chief Doug Mellis pointed out, "the third time's a charm."

In addition to various clubs and organizations from town sharing information, there were car and motorcycle shows, a Red Cross blood drive at their Bloodmobile, health screenings at the Lions Club's Eyemobile and free entertainment and food.

The biggest draws of the evening were a visit from the Life Star helicopter and a demonstration from State Police Officers Mike Baxter and Sean Maher and the dogs of the State Police's K9 unit.

Grimaldi said because this year's Night Out was such a big success, the organizers are already starting to think ahead to next year's event.
