Town plans aerial mosquito spraying

EAST LONGMEADOW The East Longmeadow Board of Health announced last week that aerial mosquito spraying will occur between April 27 and May 8. The range of dates allows for the eventuality of inclement weather.

The Board of Health has contracted with RLFS, Inc. of Livingston, New York for the aerial application of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, (Bti).

Bti is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that can effectively kill mosquito larvae present in water. It is the same material that has been used in past years. It is a bio-control product specific to mosquito larvae, midges and "no-see-ums." The material is not toxic to mammals.

The Bti will be applied to 1,000 acres of wetland areas to thoroughly cover the prime breeding sites of mosquitoes.

The public is encouraged to call the Board of Health at (413) 525-5400 extension 420, with any additional inquiries.
