Women's Community Club gives final gifts

EAST LONGMEADOW The Women's Community Club (WCC) of East Longmeadow gave their final gifst recently.

The Women's Community Club honored four East Longmeadow High School seniors for their participation in the arts and community service and awarded them $500 scholarships recently at the High School Awards Assembly.

Joy Roman, a club member, made the presentations to Christian Brown and Matthew Milner for their community service, Megan Martin for her art activities, and Adam Lyon for his participation in musical activities.

Christian Brown performed over 150 hours of community service (almost four times the required community service hours needed for graduation) during his high school years, with one-third of those hours coming from direct service to women in our community. He has been active in Boy Scouts for many years and achieved scouting's highest rank, Eagle Scout, last year. His Eagle Scout project was coordinating and managing the collection of clothing and personal items for the Springfield YWCA women's shelter. Brown plans to attend Western New England College in the fall and major in Computer Science.

Matthew Milner has also been active in community service throughout his high school years. He donated many hours helping Habitat for Humanity of Greater Springfield, the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Meals on Wheels, Holyoke Soldiers Home, East Longmeadow Senior Housing, East Longmeadow Recreation Department, Pine Knoll, and various church projects. He plans to attend Becker College in the fall.

According to her high school art teacher, Cynthia Newsome, Megan Martin "has the true heart of an artist and is definitely unique. She is creative and up for a challenge all of the time." Martin spent many hours painting a mural on the door of the Big Kids Little Kids room, which is the student run early childhood day care at the high school. She received an art award at the Homegrown Festival, sponsored by The Women's Community Club of East Longmeadow. Megan plans to attend Westfield State College in the fall, majoring in Mass Communication.

Adam Lyon was chosen for an award by the Women's Community club because of his accomplishments in music. He was selected for the Western District and Allstate Band twice. He was woodwind captain of the East Longmeadow High School marching band and was the principal clarinet player at the Western Massachusetts Senior District Concert Band. In addition, he was selected to the Lion's Club Allstate Concert Band. Adam will be attending Holyoke Community College in the fall, majoring in music.

The Women's Community Club of East Longmeadow was very pleased to present these four graduating seniors with scholarships. However, this year will be the final time that the club will be giving awards, since recently, due to the increasing difficulty of women to find time to devote to such clubs, The Women's Club of East Longmeadow has disbanded.
