Youth fishing derby returns

EAST LONGMEADOW The East Longmeadow Jaycees have announced to local residents to mark their calendars for April 15, when they will host their 46th annual fishing derby starting at 7 a.m. and running until 11 a.m., rain or shine at Heritage Park

Again area businesses have come through with fantastic contributions allowing the Jaycees to stock the pond with over 450 trout, and to provide more prizes and trophies for anglers 14 years of age or younger. Last week, The Jaycees said they were told by the trout hatchery that there will be some big troutstocked,and reminded participants to make sure they have good line on their reels.

Againthis year will be The Bassinators Casting for Kids competition, under the guidance of local area affiliate Mass Bass Federation. The competition will include casting, pitching and flipping. There will be two age groups, 7-10 and 11-14.

Winners of each age category will a win new rod and reel. In addition they will compete at the state level with the potential to move on the nationals where they will compete for up to $20,000 in scholarships.

The East Longmeadow Jaycees will also conduct a Krispy Kreme Fundraiser, with proceeds going towards this year's Fourth of JulyFireworks, and encourage fishers and non-fishers alike to stop by for some doughnuts.
