Area libraries launch auto-renewal program to benefit patronsDate: 7/17/2019 GREATER SPRINGFIELD – On July 1, all CW Mars libraries launched a new auto-renewal program to help library patrons avoid late fees on unreturned materials.
Prior to the implementation of the auto-renewal program, library materials not returned to the library or renewed by the first due date were considered late and subject to late fees. While late fees will still be in place if the material is not returned after the first auto renewal, the new program will help extend the time patrons have to head to the library or login online to renew.
“Any items that normally can be renewed are eligible for automatic renewal. The renewal time is the same as the initial amount of time the item was loaned for,” explained Laura Paul, circulation supervisor for the Agawam Public Library in Agawam.
Not all library materials are eligible for automatic renewal. For example, the Agawam Public Library does not allow for renewal of museum passes. To ensure an item is eligible for renewal, it is best to contact the local library to learn about their individual policies.
Paul said she feels that the auto-renewal program will be a benefit for library patrons. “Life can be busy and even though you know you need to renew items – because you either need them longer or can’t make it to the library by the due date – sometimes the day is too busy or you forget. This way, it’s done,” Paul said.
Library patrons with an email linked to their library cards will receive notices about due dates and automatic renewals. Paul encourages those who are unsure whether or not they have an email on file to add one via their CW Mars account online or by visiting a local library.
Paul said she has noticed that patrons have found the tool useful in its early stages. “Many patrons have already said that they love the idea of automatic renewals and have joked that they will save so much money because of it,” Paul shared.
Paul added that items will only renew once, so patrons are encouraged to closely keep track of due dates to ensure they still have access to library materials.
“Most items only renew once so keep track of your renewal dates. The new date will be in the email. Items that are too long overdue will be billed and then your card is blocked from checking out anything else, renewing other items or accessing all our great e-materials,” Paul said.
Policies can vary by library. For more information and learn more on specific library policies, please contact your local library. The Agawam Public Library can be contacted by calling 789-1550.
