Dempsey gathers local endorsements for state auditor runDate: 7/19/2022 SPRINGFIELD – Former Assistant Secretary of Transportation Chris Dempsey gathered a number of endorsements for state auditor in the region at a campaign stop in Springfield on July 11.
Coming out to Court Square to express their support were Springfield City Council President Jesse Lederman, Councilors Melvin Edwards and Tim Allen. From Chicopee came School Committee member Tim Wagner, City Councilor George Balakier and Mayoral Chief of Staff Michael Pise.
Among the other endorsements announced on July 11 were state Reps. Natalie Blais, Joe Wagner and Bud Williams along with Mayor Nicole LaChapelle of Easthampton. Former Northampton Mayor David J. Narkewicz, Northampton Ward 1 City Councilor Stan Moulton and Ward 4 City Councilor Garrick Perry also showed their support. Other Springfield officials expressing their support were At-Large City Councilor Sean Curran, School Committee Vice Chair Christopher Collins and At-Large School Committee member LaTonia Monroe Naylor.
Lederman said to Reminder Publishing said he was impressed with Dempsey’s track record and results from his time both in and out of government.
Dempsey has received the endorsement of State Auditor Suzanne Bump, something of which he said he is tremendously proud. He also won the support of the Democratic Party at its recent convention.
Bump wrote, “Chris has indisputably demonstrated his understanding that while the office has specific legal and constitutional boundaries it can still be a powerful force for good government and creative policy development and oversight. Chris is a proven watchdog for the public interest.”
Dempsey believes his leadership role in the successful volunteer grassroots effort to stop the campaign to have Boston be a site for the Olympic Games shows that he can stand up to powerful interests. He noted the efforts made in 2015 by the proponents were backed by funds that far outmatched those of No Boston Olympics and yet people listened to the arguments and rejected the proposal.
He said the role of the auditor is to “follow facts and data wherever they may take you.” In terms of the non-partisanship role of the auditor he will be a “watch dog” for the public’s interest in state government. His Republican challenger, Anthony Amore, told Reminder Publishing the Office of the Auditor deserves additional funding, Dempsey said he would do “the most the role can do even if the budget is not increased.”
Dempsey said he is eager to discuss issues with both Amore and with his Democratic opponent state Sen. Diana DiZoglio through forums and debates.
