Library presents marketing seminar for poetsDate: 5/15/2009 SPRINGFIELD The City Library has announced the following programs and events.
Local adults are encouraged to check out the monthly book discussion group at the East Forest Park Branch Library, 122 Island Pond Rd.
"The Senator's Wife" by Sue Miller will be discussed on May 27, and on June 24 we'll talk about "Year of Fog" by Michelle Richmond.
We meet at 6 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month, and new members are welcome anytime. It's said that word of mouth recommendations are the best and members are sure to learn from each other about new authors and genres.

Where does a poet begin to identify markets to publish individual poems? How should a poet submit individual poems for publication? How can a poet find out which markets pay? What is a query letter? When should a poet send in a complete manuscript? Find out in an interactive workshop on May 30 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the Central Library's Community Room, 220 State St. Workshop leader Mar a Luisa, a local poet and educator, invites participants to come with their publishing questions.
"The workshop will benefit poets of all ages and in all stages, and I welcome poets who write and speak in Spanish as well as in English," Arroyo said.
Arroyo is a native of Springfield's North End, educated at Colby (B.A.), Tufts (M.A.) and Harvard (A.B.D.) colleges, and won first place in the Spanish-language division of the Library's 2006 Poetry Contest. Arroyo is an award-winning poet, educator, single parent, and currently, a GED instructor at a local non-profit organization.
Her poems have been published in many journals including "PALABRA: A Magazine for Chicano and Latino Literary Art," "CALYX" and "The Bilingual Review." The Bilingual Review/Press (AZ) has recently published her first full-length volume of poems, "Gathering Words/Recogiendo Palabras."
