Springfield Museums celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthdayDate: 2/18/2009 SPRINGFIELD Registration for spring courses for children and adults at the Museum School of the Springfield Museums begins Feb. 23.
After school classes for kids include Artistic Discovery for ages six to eight; Drawing and Painting Secrets for ages nine to 11; Museum Designers: Studio One for ages 14 to 17; and Creative Writing for ages 14 to 17. Saturday morning children's classes are Springtime Little Explorers for ages five to seven; From Trash to Treasure and More Trash to Treasure for ages five to seven; and That's Gross! for ages eight to 11.
Courses for adults include stenciling, creative writing, culinary arts, genealogy, nature photography, graphic design, faux finishes, stained glass techniques, tarot, silk painting, quilting, scrapbooking, drawing, painting, watercolor, sculpture, and pottery.
Registration is currently underway for the following day trips: Bush-Holley House and Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Conn., on April 15; the Currier Museum of Art and Frank Lloyd Wright Zimmerman House on May 6; and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Arnold Arboretum on June 17. A six-night trip to Charleston and Savannah featuring the Spoleto Festival is planned for May 31-June 6, and a two-night trip to New York City is scheduled for Aug. 6-8. A 12-day trip to Greece is planned for May 13-25.

The Springfield Museums' Weekend Family Fun series will continue on Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. with a birthday bash for Dr. Seuss. The snow date is March 1. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield on March 2, 1904.
Weekend Family Fun programs are sponsored by T.D. Banknorth. Activities are free with museum admission.
The following is a list of programming for Dr. Seuss's birthday:
- 11 a.m.: Meet the Cat in the Hat as he prowls the Science Museum galleries.
- 11:15 a.m.: Hear a performance by the Boland School Seuss Singers.
- 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: Go wild with a rainforest art activity.
- 12-3:45 p.m.: Make a Horton Hears a Who clover.
- 12 p.m.: Meet some live animals when Creature Teachers presents "If I Ran the Rainforest."
- 12-3 p.m.: "Dr. Seuss Takes the Cake" contest. (Cake will not be served.) Stop by and vote for your favorite Seuss-themed cake decorated and donated by area bakeries. The winner will be announced at 3:45 p.m.
- 2 p.m.: Join Ronald McDonald for a reading of Green Eggs and Ham and stay for a brief performance.
The Springfield Museums are located on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards St. in downtown Springfield. Free parking is available in the Edwards Street parking lots. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (Science Museum open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.). Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and college students, $5 for children three to -17, and free for children under three and museum members. Springfield residents are free with proof of address. The fee provides admission to all four Springfield Museums and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.
