Firework celebrations set in Holyoke, South Hadley

HOLYOKE/SOUTH HADLEY — Firework celebrations for the 4th of July are set in the Holyoke and South Hadley communities and are gearing up for nights of explosive fun.

Holyoke’s fireworks celebration will take place at Holyoke Community College on Friday, June 30 with a rain date of Friday, July 7. The event begins at 6 p.m. where the public is invited to come early and enjoy music and food. There will also be various activities available for children.

Fireworks will begin at dusk and no alcoholic beverages or bottles are allowed on the HCC premises.
The city’s Independence Day celebration is sponsored by Holyoke Gas and Electric. Vendors interested in taking part in the event should contact the Parks and Recreation Department for a permit application at 413-322-5620. Only vendors permitted in advance will be allowed on site.

The city asks anyone with questions to call the mayor’s office at 413-322-5510.

Saturday, July 1 is the date South Hadley’s fireworks will be set off once again at the Michael E. Smith Middle School located on 100 Mosier St. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with fireworks scheduled to commence at 9:30 p.m. A rain date is scheduled for the following day, Sunday, July 2.

The night of celebration will include food trucks, vendors and various games for children. A live DJ will be in attendance and the South Hadley Community Band will start to play at 8 p.m.

The public is encouraged to bring a blanket and chairs as well as their own bug spray. Alcohol and tobacco products are not allowed on school grounds.

Organizers of the event the South Hadley Recreation Department ask the public to observe all parking notices throughout town. Parking near the middle school is limited so many may have to park elsewhere and walk over.

Parking is available at the Mosier School until 7 p.m. or when the lot fills, St. Theresa’s Church until 7 p.m., and Gorse Lot located at 27 Morgan St. Parking will also be available at Veryl’s Automotive for a fee that is donated to charity. Parking at the Middle School is for handicapped and event staff, police and fire department members only.

The town asks that the public note there is no parking allowed on Routes 116, 202 and 33 per state law. There is also no parking on the following streets: Mosier, Morgan, Brainerd, Pine, Parkview, W. Parkview, Richview and Belmont.

There is also no parking in prohibited zones, private property — without permission — within 20 feet of an intersection, within 5 feet of a driveway, on a tree belt, bicycle lane, sidewalk and crosswalk. Violators are subject to parking tickets or tow.

The major corporate sponsor of the event once again and for the past 20 years is PeoplesBank who will give out popcorn at the event.
