Granby library to benefit from unique fundraiser

GRANBY – A group of dedicated volunteers are overseeing a unique fundraiser for the Granby Free Public Library – selling items at Kev’s Barnyard Flea Market Co-Op.
Jennifer Crosby, MLIS, library director, noted during an interview with Reminder Publications that after volunteers talked with flea market owner Kevin Mytkowitz, free space was secured to sell items for the library.
“The library has had a few tag sales and ‘mom 2 mom’ sales that have been very successful so we wanted to continue the effort and this is a perfect way to keep it ongoing,” Crosby said.
The flea market is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and a wide array of merchandise includes antiques, pre-owned items and furniture. The co-op resides inside a historical 19th century post and beam, New England barn with merchandise constantly changing as new vendors arrive each month.
“We have a small waiting list so space continues to become available,” Mytkowitz said.
Crosby noted that the library’s booth space on the upper floor has household items, games, toys, collectibles, antiques, glassware and serving dishes.
“Donations are accepted at the library for the booth,” Crosby said. “Our volunteers then come and pick them up, sort and price them before bringing them to Kev’s.”
Crosby added that the fundraiser is unique since it offers items at a low cost because all items are donated.
“This allows people to donate knowing it is going to a good cause, the purchasers get a bargain, and the library benefits,” she said, adding, “it is a win/win situation for everyone.”
Items donated that do not sell at Kev’s are then sold at the library’s tag sales, according to Crosby.
Crosby encouraged area residents to consider donating items they no longer need since the library is currently raising funds to work on landscaping and a children’s garden project.
“All money raised at Kev’s goes to the Friends of the Granby Library’s Capital Needs Fund,” Crosby said.
