Holyoke celebrates Olmsted’s 200th birthday

Date: 5/3/2022

HOLYOKE – To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the Holyoke Preservation Trust hosted a ceremony on April 26 at Pulaski Park.

In addition to Pulaski Park, Olmsted was the designer of urban parks throughout the U.S. including Central Park in New York City.

Olmsted, his sons and his successor firm designed 6,000 landscapes including four parks in Holyoke. Joining Pulaski Park in Holyoke are Jones Point, Riverside and Elmwood.

Attending the event was Mayor Joshua Garcia, who read a proclamation and declared April 26 as Frederick Law Olmsted Day.

“The city of Holyoke is lucky to have such a park that is so connected to just American history overall. To know that Mr. Olmsted led in that field, that we have not just one park but a couple here in Holyoke, it shows how much American history is rooted in the city of Holyoke,” Garcia said. “To offer that history lesson to our youth, its an important part of our responsibility to educate the next generation of those investments that were offered by previous generations.”

Garcia added some basic maintenance for the park was due and that he believes there are plans in the pipeline to invest Community Preservation Act funds to clean up some of the park and repair portions.

Joining the mayor was Holyoke Preservation Trust member Olivia Mausel, who along side Garcia, spoke to students from Mater Dolorosa Elementary. Students then asked the two officials questions about Olmsted and his history.
