Holyoke residents warned to avoid Connecticut River after sewer discharge and overflow

Date: 8/29/2022

HOLYOKE – The heavy rainstorm seen on Aug. 23 resulted in combined sewer overflow and discharges from the City of Holyoke’s sewage collection system into the Connecticut River.

The burst of precipitation seen on the afternoon of Aug. 23 was recorded by the Holyoke Water Pollution Control Facility, which identified the contamination. These discharges may have negative water quality impacts downstream the river adjacent to Holyoke according to a release from the city. For the time being, swimming, fishing, boating and other uses which may involve water contact is discouraged.

Reminder Publishing reached out to the Holyoke Department of Public Works (DPW) for comment but did not receive a response by press time.

Kathleen Fournier of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Springfield office said based on the notice released by the city, Holyoke is required by 314 CMR 16.03 to issue public advisory notifications and report the event to MassDEP as soon as possible but no later than two hours after the discovery of a discharge or overflow. MassDEP will now review any submitted information from the city and determine if further actions must be taken by the city.
