Holyoke Civic Symphony to perform epiphaniea Oct. 23

HOLYOKE The Holyoke Civic Symphony will perform epiphanies by the winner of its 2005 Composition Competition Nickitas J. Demos on Oct. 23. Demos work was selected from a large number of submissions from around the world. Music Director David Kidwell will conduct the performance in the Holyoke Community College Forum. The concert begins at 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Also on the program will be Samuel Barber'sFirst Essay for Orchestra (Op. 12) and Brahms Symphony No. 3 in F-Major (Op. 90).

Demos music has been described as rich and powerful as well as lively, attractive, kinetic [and] intriguing by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; as fresh and exhilarating by The Nashville Scene; as compelling, deeply evocative music, well worth exploring by the Georgia Music News and as ambitious, sophisticated and a reflection of the current mix of styles and aesthetic postures by the New York-based magazine, The New Music Connoisseur. Demos is associate professor of composition and coordinator of composition studies at the Georgia State University School of Music. He holds a doctor of musical arts degree in composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University where he studied with Donald Erb. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the 2004 Millennium Arts International Competition for Composers and seven ASCAP awards.

HCS was formed in 1966 as part of Holyoke Community College. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a variety of opportunities for community members to perform and hear symphonic works.
