Holyoke vets honor three

At the annual Veterans Day ceremony presented by the United Veterans of Holyoke on Thursday at at the War Memorial, three people received the group's annual awards. Air Force veteran Peter Thorpe was named "Veteran of the Year." Holyoke native and Police Officer Ronald Mihalak Jr. was given the annual "Public Safety Award" by the city's Veteran Agent Kris Lecca. Mihalak was noted for the concern he shows veterans as part of his law enforcement duties. Holyoke Mayor Michael Sullivan received the "Citizen of the Year Award" from Mayor-elect Elaine Pluta. Lecca said elected officials have seldom received the award, but that Sullivan's support of veterans during his 10-year tenure warranted the exception.
