Library hires new children's librarian

HOLYOKE Jaunita Melendez of Longmeadow and formerly of San Juan, Puerto Rico, has joined Holyoke Public Library as Children's Librarian, it was reported this week by Maria G. Pagan, Library Director.

Melendez is a graduate of the Inter American University of San German, Puerto Rico, where she earned her Master of Library Science Degree. Her studies covered a wide range of library related subjects including reference, cataloging, circulation, administration and outreach. At the present time, Melendez is pursuing advanced courses in English at the West Springfield Public Library.

Prior to moving to Longmeadow, Melendez had served on the staff of the San Juan Conservatory of Music for 25 years, retiring as a Librarian in 2005. She and her husband are the parents of three children, a daughter, who is here with her in Longmeadow and two sons who live in Puerto Rico. She has six grandchildren, two of whom are here with her in Longmeadow.

Among Melendez goals for the children's programming at Holyoke Public Library are bringing back story hours for toddlers and preschoolers with programs to be offered in both English and Spanish. She is anxious to learn more about the Holyoke community in order to structure programs that meet the needs of the area.

As part of the library's outreach efforts, Melendez will be working toward providing more assistance to preschoolers and their parents or guardians. She also hopes to schedule classes for parents who wish to teach their children the Spanish language.
