Schools launch local foods buying program

Holyoke Mayor Michael Sullivan addressed the audience at Sullivan School.
Holyoke Mayor Michael Sullivan spoke to students participating in the Holyoke Summer Enrichment Program and the USDA Summer Lunch Program last Wednesday. His speech, encouraging eating nutritious food, was given at the Sullivan School on Jarvis Avenue. Sullivan congratulated Holyoke Public Schools Food Services for launching a local foods buying program that provides fresh healthy produce to Holyoke youth from small, local farms. The model, known as "Farm to School," helps to combat two national epidemics: childhood obesity and the loss of small, family farms. The press conference was attended by representatives of the Holyoke School Committee and School Department, as well as from Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA), a non-profit organization working to sustain agriculture throughout the country.
