HOLYOKE The much-used spray park at Springdale Park on Main Street will get a big addition for next summer more spray area that will double the size of the existing feature.

Mayor Michael Sullivan and other city officials broke ground on the project last Tuesday.

The $150,000 project is being paid by federal Community Development Block Grant funding and will be ready for next year, Sullivan said.

"I know it's going to have a positive effect," he said.

Sullivan said the city is planning to turn the Feldman Pool that has been unused for the past two years into a spray park.

Teresa Shepard, the director of the city's Parks and Recreation department, said the new spray park additional would be a circular shape and have a toddler's area. She added that thousands of people use the Springdale Park in the summer, especially the spray park area.

She said the city waited until the end of the summer to begin construction so it would not interrupt the summer season.

She said work on converting the Feldman Pool would begin in the spring.

The city operates one municipal pool Pouliout Pool and that it is very expensive to do so. Shepard said the free pool has an eight-week summer season and is open seven days a week. Between 200 and 500 people use the pool each day.

"We do a fantastic job with the one pool left in the city," she said.
