HOLYOKE -- In an effort to inspire Holyoke residents to get out and active in the warm weather, Mayor Michael J. Sullivan has launched an eight- week-long series of walks titled"Walk in Downtown."

The walks, which began on May 7, will continue to happen every Thursday through June 25. Participants meet in front of City Hall at 4:30 p.m., where the mayor will then lead them on an hour-long walk on the route of his choice.

A key component to the success of the "Walk in Downtown" program will be the sponsorship of different local businesses each week. So far, Vega Yoga and Movement Arts and HCS Headstart have stepped forward to sponsor the weeks of June 4 and 18, respectively. This leaves a total of four walks that are still in need of a sponsor.

For businesses who may be interested in this opportunity to get involved with the community, contributions may include anything from water to T-shirts to bringing a team to participate in the walk.

Aide to the mayor Jennifer Perez views the walks as both, "a good way to get in your hour of exercise and get to talk to the mayor at the same time." Businesses interested in aiding the success of "Walks in Downtown" are encouraged to contact Sullivan's office at 322-5511 for more information.
