African drum concert brings rhythm to Longmeadow

Date: 6/23/2021

LONGMEADOW – The Longmeadow Town Green was alive with the rhythm of drums on June 16. Tamarack Hollow Nature & Cultural Center Director and Founder Aimee Gelinas partnered with the Longmeadow Cultural Council and the Parks and Recreation Department to put on a free outdoor concert.

Gelinas teaches African and Carribean drumming in Longmeadow and Northampton as part of the Valley Rhythm Keepers and she led the students in three pieces of music. Afterward, Gelinas’s band Gaia Roots played for the audience. The band consists of Gelinas, her husband and Tamarack Hollow co-founder Dan Cohen on drums as well as lead vocalist and percussionist Shanti Starr. Gelinas and Starr explained the roots of each piece of music and the traditional African instuments they used.
