LONGMEADOW — Rivan Seth Roychowdhury is a fairly typical 10-year-old. He is full of energy and likes to draw and play games. However, he is also a burgeoning writer, who has published his first book of poetry.
“What I See” is a collection of 10 poems written by the Blueberry Hill School fifth grader. After Roychowdhury’s class learned about writing poetry in fourth grade, he began writing his own. The poems in the book are largely about his thoughts and experiences, but some are more fantastic in nature.
“I like to write about monsters and mythical creatures,” Roychowdhury said. His mother, Monika Seth, suggested he try to write 10 poems because he was 10 years old.
“It’s a talent,” Roychowdhury said about writing.
Poetry is not the only medium with which the young author has experimented. He also started working on a horror-genre book, although he has since scrapped that idea and has moved on to another story. Of all his creative interests, Roychowdhury said drawing is his favorite. Not only are the images in the book based on his drawings, but after a cartoonist and illustrator spoke to students at the school,
Roychowdhury began working on his own comic strips. Seth said the school should be commended for exposing students to various art forms.
Roychowdhury has not told his teachers and classmates about the book and is excited to surprise them. He said he hopes they enjoy it.
“What I See” will be available on Amazon and may soon be for sale in local bookstores.
